Shattered Rock Shiraz

Shiraz
Shattered Rock Shiraz

Shiraz is the hallmark variety of the Barossa Valley, known for its generosity of fruit and versatility in a variety of geographically and climatically different conditions. Our Shiraz is no exception. We have 14 different Shiraz sites planted to a variety of clones and formats- own roots, different rootstocks and different row orientations.
We deliberately planted our Shiraz on some of the more difficult sites which usually yields an average of 5.5 to 6 t/ha. Shattered Rock Shiraz is not a formulaic wine. It will never be the same from year to year. We strive always to let the fruit express itself with minimal interference during winemaking. We sort of just help it along.

We vinify 3 to 6 ferments and mature them separately in barrel for 6 months before final blending and further barrel maturation for up to another 12 months. Usually the wines start drinking well between two and three years of age and will cellar for up to 10 years.

Shattered Rock Shiraz 2006

Tasting Notes:

2006 was a warmer year than 2005. Hence this Shiraz is generous and warm with loads of flavour. It shows all of the flavours we are becoming familiar with from our vineyards-red berries, spice and game. As it is from a warmer year it exhibits more robust characters of dark chocolate, earth and tar rather than the spicy peppery overtones of a cooler year.  As ever the tannins are fine grained and the finish lingering and complex. It is suited to well flavoured  meat dishes, classically to lamb and fine mature cheese. Enjoy!

Shattered Rock Shiraz 2005
***** Rated 94 points by James Halliday

Tasting Notes:

If we would call our Shiraz 04 a teenager, this Shiraz 2005 is a young adult! It is of a more complex structure that will evolve during the coming years!
It’s nose shows an elegant and fine fruit concentration combined with spicy peppery  overtones, on the palate complex flavours of red berries, dark fruits and spice and game, with a long, soft, ripe and fine grained tannic finish.
It is suited to well flavoured dishes, classically it accompanies beautifully a nice butterflied leg of lamb and fine mature cheese.

The wine starts drinking well between two and tree years and will cellar for up to 10 years.

Tasting Notes:

Very dense and dark red, a wonderful nose of concentrated plums and spice, mocca and cedar, on the palate a great concentration of fruit and power with complex flavours of red berries, cherry, spice, game and black pepper, soft tannins and a long long finish make this a very elegant and enjoyable wine.
We recommend it with well flavoured food such as a nice roasted lamb or mature cheese.
18 mths in barrel.
It drinks well now, and will evolve for 3 – 5 years and will cellar up to 8 years.
