The name expresses the wine's concept and story: It's a friendly union of the four grape varieties produced by the four friends!
Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Viognier
Recipie: "Use a swag of lovely juicy Grenache, plump it out with some Shiraz and a judicious portion of Mourvèdre (to give it a bit more backbone) and then provide some lift with a nice slurp of Viognier - the whole enchilada."
The blend varies each vintage, but is generally in the range of Grenache 65%, Shiraz 20%, Mourvèdre 10% and Viognier 5%.
Our Shattered Rock Four Friends showcases what the Barossa Valley does to perfection with these favoured varieties of the Rhone Valley. In the Barossa Valley warm ripening days and cool nights provide the best conditions for generously flavoured wines. We put them together and the result is a medium bodied wine with good mid-palate mouth feel and which is ligth and more forward and approachable when young. We aim for subtle and complex flavours rather than the upfront overt fruit which is synonymous with straight varietals. It's a versatile wine and will match with a wide variety of foods and cuisines - but especially mediterranean cuisines.
Continuing in the style of previous years this is a fruit driven wine. The aromas are of cherries, sour plums, red fruits (these all hint at succulence), herbs and cedarwood or dusty oak. The palate is soft, full and long. There is good fruit length throughout with only moderate firm and drying tannins. However these tannins are an integral part of the wine, complementing and balancing the fruit. Hence a wine with a little more structure than the 2006 and which reflects the “draught year” of 2007. This is another food wine
“The friendly union of four grapes, produced by the four friends!”
A wonderful harmony of fruit flavours and spice make this generous, medium-bodied wine the perfect companion to Mediterranean cuisine! A lifted complex aroma of black fruits, chocolate and spices precedes the fleshy, warm palate of spice and herb flavours. The excellent structure is the perfect backbone for its succulence. Firm dusty tannins contribute to the savoury, dry finish – the perfect combo!
This wine is our interpretation of the friendly union of the four grape varieties! It is a medium bodied, espansive, easy drinking wine, with very good structure, ‘sympatico’ with food. Soft, supple Grenache plays the dominant role, supported by the fleshier Shiraz and the more structured, robust Mourvèdre – a dash of Viognier provides the final lift and complexity.
Four Friends is of dense dark colour, in the nose a composition of dark fruit and spice and on the palate there is a beautiful combination of blackberries and spices and nuances of licorice and herbs. Medium bodied with soft, supple, generous mid-palate feel it has obvious fruit and strong spice flavours. Firm dusty tannins contribute to a savoury dry finish.
An affable wine eminently suited to Mediterranean cuisine.
