In 1997 Brian Thomson & Anne Moroney purchased a 26 hectare property between Lyndoch & Rosedale in the south-west of the Barossa Valley. After three years searching for an established vineyard they decided to start one from scratch. They selected a vineyard site in an area previously not planted to vines.
There were many factors affecting the site selection. It is elevated, has a variety of aspects and topsoils that are not too deep or fertile and which overlay subsoils with a high rock and shale content. These factors contribute to reduced vigour and significantly higher quality fruit.
This is the MOOLANDA Vineyard. The first vines were planted in the spring of 1998-approximately 3.25 hectares of two different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and 6 hectares of Shiraz, the jewel in the viticultural crown of the Barossa Valley.
In the spring of 2004 a further 6.5 hectares were planted at MOOLANDA 3.3 hectares of a very old clone of Shiraz 1.7 ha of Mourvedre 1.5 ha of Viognier.
The planting in 2005 of .75 ha of Viognier completed the development of this vineyard.
